Something I forgot to mention in my previous post… Sheena’s blog is at http://pdxsheena.blogspot.com, and I recommend checking it out if you don’t go there already. She’s a great writer, and a pretty good photographer too, even if I do hate to admit it 😉

Pete’s Travels
Things got kinda crazy during my travels, hence the blogging silence over the past couple of weeks. However, now I’m back in the UK, its time to share some more experiences of the fantastic month I’ve had. Here’s instalment number one!
My time in Portland was pretty interesting even before the excitement of Shawn and Laura’s wedding. I’d been to the city on two previous occasions, but had somehow managed to miss ‘First Thursday’, Portland’s very own evening of art, wine and music.
The big day
Yesterday I was enthusiastically toasting the newly married Mr and Mrs Shawn and Laura Cardwell! Its been my privilege to know these guys for the last 3 years or so, and its great to see them finally tie the not.
The day started at the home of a friend who has a stunning garden down by Lake Oswego. The ceremony was informal and beautiful, very befitting of the couple. Both Shawn and Laura had trouble holding it together on a couple of occasions, such was the emotion of the proceedings.
Brunch
Over the last few days, I’ve got to know many of Shawn’s close friends, and I’ve been even more impressed with the way that Shawn shows God’s love for the people around him, than I had been before. Of particular note was the brunch we shared the morning after the stag do – or bachelor party as they call it over here.
A wii bit of action
One of the great things about this trip is that I was able to take enough time off to fit in both Shawn and Laura’s wedding at the start of the month, with the Downtown House of Prayer seventh birthday celebration towards the end of it.
So, Having settled in nicely at Kurt’s place in Beaverton, the guys headed out to Rich’s place for Shawn’s stag do. Beer, pizza and wii were about the sum of our evening, and a good time was had by all. I’ve not played on a Nintendo wii before, but I’ve got to say wii tennis is sheer genius. Four guys lashing controllers all over the room was a good recipe for laughs, and I’m not sure how long its going to take for my aching shoulder to recover.
Good times.
I’m here
Luckily! There I was in Philadelphia Intl Airport, tucking in to a rather nice pork sandwich, when I suddenly realised that my reckoning was an hour out. One mad dash down the concourse later, I arrived just as my connecting flight to Portland was boarding.
Bit close for comfort…
Uncle Pete
![]()
After what has apparently become a ‘notorious’ birth amongst the midwives at Wycombe General Hospital (I’ll avoid the gory details!), young Charlie has left the comfort of the womb, and was busy charming the Ward and Fryer families this weekend.
Mother and baby are well, and I’m enjoying being an uncle!
I wish I brought my camera
Ever had one of those moments when you wish you’d brought a decent camera out of the house with you?
I had one of those moments this evening. There’s a great park about 15mins walk from my house, with fantastic views over Reading. As I walked, I noticed bonfire smoke passing through the trees, illuminated by the setting sun as it did so.
Truly a beautiful few seconds. Unfortunately the camera on my mobile phone wasn’t really up to the moment!
Technology Rant
I enjoy a good technology rant, and the levels of health and safety nonsense over wi-fi radiation have induced this little gem from Peter Cochran, ex R&D head at BT.
Enjoy…
What nicer way…
What nicer way is there to end a bank holiday weekend, than to spend the evening at home with a few friends and some good beer from your local micro brewery 🙂
